PURPOSE: To consider setting a date for a public hearing on a possible
increase in the Orange County occupancy tax rate .
BACKGROUND: The Orange County Visitor Bureau has recommended that the
Board of Commissioners increase the occupancy tax rate on hotels,
motels, and other covered accommodations from 1% to 2% . The Manager
suggests that the Board conduct a public hearing on this matter at the
February 20 meeting, and depending on public input received, consider
making a decision immediately after the public hearing, or at a
subsequent date, on whether t'O increase the occupancy tax rate.
RECOMMENDATION: The Manager recommends that the Board schedule a
public hearing on this matter for 7 : 30pm on Tuesday, February 20, at
the OWASA Community Room on Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro.
