Our mission is to support, encourage and strengthen the artistic and cultural development of Orange County, NC.
Organization History
Created in 1985 as the official county government agency on the arts by Resolution of the Board of County
Commissioners(BOCC),we serve as a clearinghouse for arts information,facilitate arts program development&
advise the BOCC on the arts. We have served as the Designated County Partner(DCP)-formerly Local
Distributing Agent(LDA)-in Orange County since 1985. Our on-going arts programs include the following: 2
Grant Cycles(Spring and Fall)annually that fund artists&nonprofit organizations utilizing both state&county
funds; participation in annual Emerging Artists Grants Program through the Durham Arts Council (for Orange,
Durham, Chatham, Person&Granville counties); annual Piedmont Laureate Program (for Orange, Durham,
Wake, &Alamance counties),Arts Incubation Program; quarterly Artists'Salons featuring free professional
development for artists; monthly e-newsletters&other occasional publications;website providing arts
information, events calendar&a searchable online local arts directory;annual 4th U.S. Congressional District
High School Art Competition in Orange County(with schools in parts of Durham,Wake,Alamance, Chatham, &
Cumberland counties); Public Art located on county-owned properties,and Special Arts Projects.We were one of
the 161 study partners in the national Arts& Economic Prosperity IV study(by Americans for the Arts).We are
organizationally located within Orange County government's Economic Development Commission and physically
located inside the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Center in Chapel Hill.

Emerging Artists Grant Program Information
The Orange County Information Session for the Emerging Artists Program will
be held in early August, 2013.Visit the Orange County Arts Commission's website
at www.artsorang_e.org for updated information about the date of this meeting.
This statewide North Carolina Arts Council program is administered locally by the Durham Arts
Council each fall to enable individual artists who have mastered the basic techniques of their art
form to complete projects that will establish their professional presence.

Grant, an artist must have lived in one of the five partner counties at least a year, must be 18
years of age and cannot be a student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in their

August 23, 2013 Artists' Salon at ArtsCenter
The next Artists' Salon, sponsored by the Orange County Arts Commission,will be held
on Friday,August 23rd from 6:30-9 pm in the West End Theatre at The ArtsCenter in
Carrboro.
At the beginning of a new school year, Chapel Hill teaching artist and author Faye Stanley will be our
guest presenter.
Faye Stanley facilitates workshops and trainings and presents at conferences international) . Her book,
The Teaching Artist Toolbox: Connecting Your Art and the School av
was published by New Village Press, and her books and CD's Music and
Sound:Learning Experiences for the Elementary Classroom, Singing to
Learn:A Multicultural Approach to Early Childhood Curriculum, and World
Games to Sing and Dance in the Classroom and Community are also
available. She wrote the JAM Guide for the North Carolina Arts Council,
outlining programmatic content for cultural music traditions in after-school
programs, and consults on arts based initiatives with schools
internationally. Faye also serves on the North Carolina Arts Council's Arts
in Education Advisory Committee, is a mentor for the Kennedy Center's Artists as Educators seminars,
and is Director of the Arts and Engagement project for Duke University. Faye holds a Bachelor of Music
degree and a Masters in Education.
Faye Stanley offers trainings for teaching artists that support the development of skills to link
their artistic practice to the goals and objectives of the classroom setting. This professional
development serves not only to strengthen understanding and competence in the education
world, but also strengthens artistic practice.
Faye and her husband operate Clapping Dog Music, a composition and recording studio where they
create CDs and supplementary materials for the classroom.
The purpose of this free salon series is to bring together artists of all disciplines in a casual setting to
share ideas, concerns and information.Artists'Salons can serve as a place to get feedback from peers
as well as to share all of the problems and pleasures of being an artist.
