Background: In July 1993, the General Assembly in G.S. X143 - 571 established a statewide multidisciplinary, multiagency, child fatality prevention system consisting of the State Child Fatality Prevention Team(CFPT) and local teams specifically established in G.S. t 143 - 576.1. These local teams are the Community Child Protection Team, established by Executive Order and then continued by General Statute and the Child Fatality Prevention Team which was required to go into operation in each county by July 1995. G.S. t 143 - 576 not only defines the creation of the teams, but also outlines the duties and composition of both local teams and requires that they submit annual reports to the Board of County Commissioners. 2 The purpose of the local CFPT is threefold: • to promote understanding of the causes of childhood deaths, • to identify deficiencies in the delivery of services to children and families by public agencies, and • to make and carry out recommendations for changes that will prevent future child deaths. Two members of the local Orange County CFPT will present the report. They are Dr. Butch Huston of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for North Carolina and Gretchen Aylsworth, Director of the Guardian Ad Litem Program for Orange and Chatham counties. Recommendation: To receive as information.
