Background: The Council's Mission Statement and Voluntary Dues Policy is attached as information. Chair Crowther now serves on this council. The BOCC considered the continued membership to this organization at the March 18 Board Meeting; but,this item was tabled. The next meting of the Council is scheduled for June 11. Chair Crowther would like to indicate the status of Orange County's membership at that meeting. Alexander Drive in the Research Triangle Park. Please notice Mary lane Chapman at 558-9393 to let her know whether or not you will be able to attend the meeting. The June meeting will focus on: • the characteristics and principles of the 3 alternative regional development scenarios that will be developed for our Regional Development Choices project, and • a report and discussion of the solid waste management work that council member Nan Keohane has been spearheading. This is an important meeting for the council as it points toward the December 17 World Class Region Conference on the Regional Development Choices project. Description The Greater Triangle Regional Council: • is an independent organization; • sets goals and develops long-term strategies; • accomplishes its goals by fostering support, enlisting the participation and contributions of others, and coordinating their efforts; • focuses on 'win-win techniques" to share resources so that all communities share in the benefits and burdens of change; • demonstrates the features, advantages, and benefits of the ventures it supports in order to gamer the participation of others in the region; • may sponsor ventures, but usually works with and through other organizations and local governments that operate programs or deliver services. Membership Members are selected for the experiences, perspectives, knowledge of the region, skills, and resources that they can bring to the council. A regional outlook, commitment to the mission and work of the council, and leadership in community endeavors are essential criteria for membership. The membership spans the region and includes people with experience in government, business, educational institutions, and civic organizations. Management The council develops a budget, obtains funding, and determines what staff support is needed consistent with its mission, authority, and functions. Funding for the council has come from private donations and voluntary member dues. Box 12276 strategic Research Triangle Park, NC 27709 919-549-0551 Fax: 919-549-9390 Directions Street Address: 100 Park Drive Voluntary Dues Policy Approved by the Council—September 26, 1995 All council members are valued for their personal contributions to the work of the council, regardless of their contribution of dues to help fund the council. A membership dues structure to support the work of the Greater Triangle Regional Council should: • Be simple, • Be voluntary, • Encourage all members to contribute in similar amounts, and • Provide the minimum amount needed to support the basic operations of the council as it undertakes projects. Additional funds for significant projects will be raised separately from targetted funding sources. Based on these policy guidelines, the following voluntary dues structure was developed, recognizing that it may not be possible for some members to contribute funds each year. It will be left to the discretion of each member on the best way to contribute funds to undertake the work of the council. The fiscal year for the council runs from July 1 through June 30. Voluntary Annual Dues Structure Businesses = $1,000-$3,000 Counties & municipalities with 100,000+ population = $3,000 with between 25,000 and 100,000 population = $2,000 with-less than 25,000 population = $1,000 Major universities= $3,000 Civic organizations, regional groups and foundations = $1,000 Other educational institutions = $1,000 5 The Greater Triangle Regional Council Setting P.O.
