PURPOSE: Consider a Resolution of Commendation for Anne C. Barnes.
BACKGROUND: Anne C. Barnes has served the citizens of Orange County and
the citizens of North Carolina for 27 years. She will be honored for
her commitment and accomplishments at a dinner and roast Saturday, June
7. This resolution will be presented to her at that time.
RECOb1MENDATION: Approve the resolution and direct the clerk to distribute
copies to the press and to spread this resolution upon the pages of the
minutes for this meeting.

RESOLUTION OF COMMENDATION
For
Anne C. Barnes
WHEREAS,the Honorable Anne C.Barnes was elected by the citizens of Orange County to serve as a county commissioner
in November, 1978 and served until December 15, 1981 at which time she was elected to the North Carolina House
of Representatives where she served with distinction from 1981 until 1996;and
WHEREAS,while an Orange County Commissioner, she gave freely of her time and energy with her service to the board,
the Council on Aging,the Agricultural Task Force,the CETA Advisory Council and the Board of Social Services;
and
WHEREAS,in December, 1980,she was elected by her fellow commissioners to serve as chair of the board,the first woman
to serve the Orange County Board of Commissioners in this capacity;and
WHEREAS, throughout her 1S year career in the North Carolina House of Representatives, Mrs. Barnes earned the respect
and admiration of her colleagues and constituents, serving as chair of the Education Committee and Education
Oversight Committee;and
WHEREAS,during her 27 years of service to Orange County and the State of North Carolina,Mrs. Barnes has demonstrated
selfless devotion to,patient understanding of,and a unique insight into the concerns of the citizens she serves;and
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners, acting on behalf of the citizens of Orange
County,hereby expresses to Anne C. Barnes its sincere gratitude and deep appreciation for nearly three decades of
public service;and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be presented to Representative Barnes, to the press, and that the
resolution shall become a part of the minutes of this meeting,this second day of June, 1997.
