PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of May 4 - 10, 1997 as Disability Awareness Week.
BACKGROUND: Orange County has many outstanding citizens, many of whom are disabled. The
week of May 4 - 10, 1997 is National Disability Awareness Week and citizens are urged to recognize
the efforts and accomplishments of these individuals.
The Orange County Disability Awareness Council (OCDAC) is a non-profit, volunteer citizens
action group dedicated to improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities in Orange County.
The OCDAC promotes opportunities to work and live in an environment free of barriers imposed by
architecture, attitude, and/or lack of opportunity. The Council seeks to increase the community's
understanding of issues that affect people with disabilities.
Representatives from the OCDAC will present the proclamation.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the proclamation and
authorize the Chair to sign.

May 4 - 10, 1997
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, persons with disabilities have abilities,talents and dreams, and
with respect and acceptance, individuals with disabilities--mental
or physical--can participate in our society and the work force to
their fullest capacity; and
WHEREAS, although Orange County offers many opportunities for people with
disabilities, some of our citizens remain unaware of the capabilities
and aspirations of people with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, persons with disabilities are a resource we cannot afford to waste;
and
WHEREAS, Orange County is committed to taking all steps necessary for the
full integration of people with disabilities into our community.
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the ORANGE COUNTY BOARD
OF COMMISSIONERS do hereby proclaim May 4 - 10, 1997 as "DISABILITY
AWARENESS WEEK"in Orange County and urge our citizens to become more aware
of the needs, capabilities and hopes of people with disabilities.
