Nutter for their contributions to Orange County's farmland preservation goals. BACKGROUND: The Nutter family owns and operates the Mapleview Farm, a 400-acre dairy operation located on Dairyland Road in Bingham Township. The Nutters have owned Mapleview Farm since 1963. Throughout the years the Nutters have demonstrated their commitment to Orange County by outstanding stewardship of their land and involvement in their community. Most recently, the Nutter family has taken steps to ensure the long-term viability of their farm. After subdividing part of their land for residential development, the Nutters donated a conservation easement of over one hundred acres to the Triangle Land Conservancy in December 1995. In November, 1996, they opened a processing plant to bottle their farm- produced milk under the brand name "Mapleview Farm Milk". The product, sold in returnable glass bottles, is widely available throughout the Triangle area. The Board of Commissioners, at their meeting of December 17, 1996, designated Mapleview Farm as a Voluntary Agricultural District. Through planning and diversification, the Nutters have provided an example of how farming families can ensure their way of life will remain part of the Orange County landscape for generations to come. Dolly Hunter, Chairperson of the Agricultural Districts Advisory Board, has requested formal recognition of Robert P. and Aubrey C. Nutter and family for their efforts in promoting farmland preservation. RECOMMENDATION: The Administration recommends awarding the attached Proclamation to the Nutter Family of Mapleview Farm for their commitment to farmland preservation. sALGrange County Agricultural Districts Advisory Board 2 December 18, 1996 Moses Carey, Jr. 901 Lystra Lane Chapel Hill,NC 27516 Dear Moses: Don Belk informed me that last evening the Board approved the Voluntary Agricultural District application for the Mapleview Farm. I understand you requested that the item be removed from the Consent Agenda so that you could personally commend the Nutter family for their positive efforts to further farmland preservation in Orange County. I want to thank you for recognizing the Nutters, and also for your support of the Agricultural Districts Advisory Board during your tenure as Chair. Several months ago,the ADAB drafted a proclamation for Bob Nutter, but because we were dealing with other pressing issues, it was never sent to the BOCC. In consideration of your kind words last evening, however,I want to forward the enclosed proclamation for presentation by the Board. I've asked Don Belk to work with Beverly Blythe to develop the Proclamation for presentation at the January 21, 1997 meeting of the Board of Commissioners. I feel it is very important to publicly and formally recognize the Nutters for the contribution they have made and for the example they have set for others in the farming community. Once again,Moses, many thanks. Sincerely, re er, Chair Agricultural Districts Advisory Board clo Orange County Planning&Inspections Deparnment 306F Revere Road Hillsborough,NC 27278 Hillsborough*732-8181 Chapel lfiff*967-9251 Durham*688-7331 Mebane*227-2031 3 PROCLAMATION OF THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS TO THE FAMILY OF ROBERT P. AND AUBREY C. NUTTER AND MAPLEVIEW FARM FOR LEADERSHIP IN FARMLAND PRESERVATION The Board of Commissioners hereby commends Robert P. and Aubrey C. Nutter and Family of Mapleview Farm for your leadership in farmland preservation in Orange County. You have exhibited foresight and generosity in the establishment of a conservation plan for Mapleview Farm and its designation as a Voluntary Agricultural District. By recognizing the unique agricultural and scenic attributes of your beloved Mapleview Farm, your family took the action necessary to ensure its preservation, both as a working farm and a beautiful scenic vista that is treasured by all residents of Orange County. You were keen to recognize that significant and tangible opportunities exist to help farmers keep their land in family hands and ensure that future generations may reap the rewards of the farming life and its attendant benefits to the community. Thanks to your magnanimous deeds, Mapleview Farm will serve as an example for other owners of land possessing valuable environmental and cultural resources. In your wisdom and prudence in protecting Mapleview Farm, you have established a model of land stewardship in which Orange County citizens can be justifiably proud.
