PURPOSE: To consider a resolution recognizing Jan Sassaman for his volunteer service on
the Solid Waste Advisory Board.
BACKGROUND: On the last day of June 2013, with the closing of the Orange County Landfill,
the Solid Waste Advisory Board will dissolve. Jan Sassaman has served as a member of the
Solid Waste Advisory Board since its creation thirteen years ago, including serving in a
leadership role as Chair.
In addition to Mr. Sassaman's commitment to the activities of the Solid Waste Advisory Board,
over the years he has served as a consultant in the solid and hazardous waste field
internationally working on evaluation of incineration technologies, hazardous waste site
mitigation, risk assessment and a broad array of other related topics.
Jan Sassaman has provided a persistent and impassioned voice for protection of the
environment of Orange County.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve and authorize
the Chair to sign the attached resolution recognizing Jan Sassaman for his volunteer service on
the Solid Waste Advisory Board.

RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING JAN SASSAMAN FOR
COMMUNITY SERVICE ON THE
SOLID WASTE ADVISORY BOARD
WHEREAS, Jan Sassaman will be concluding his service on the Solid Waste Advisory
Board when the Board dissolves at the closing of the Orange County
Landfill at the end of June 2013; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Sassaman has served as a member of the Solid Waste Advisory Board
since its creation thirteen years ago, including serving in a leadership role
as Chair; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to Mr. Sassaman's commitment to activities of the Solid Waste
Advisory Board, over the years he has served as a consultant in the solid
and hazardous waste field internationally working on evaluation of
incineration technologies, hazardous waste site mitigation, risk
assessment and a broad array of other related topics; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Sassaman has provided a persistent and impassioned voice for
protection of the environment of Orange County;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners
hereby recognizes Jan Sassaman for his outstanding service to the staff of
the Solid Waste Management Department, the Orange County Board of
Commissioners and the people of Orange County during his exemplary
volunteer service on the Solid Waste Advisory Board.
