Convenience Center Expansion and recommends that it be approved by the County. The purpose of CO No. 1 is to compensate the contractor, W.L. Bishop Construction Company, for undercutting and backfilling approximately 1614 cubic yards (cy) of unsuitable soils at a unit cost of $17.00 per cy. This unit cost was provided by W.L. Bishop within the Unit Cost Schedule contained in the project Bid Form. The presence of the unsuitable soils was an unforeseen condition. The sources of funds for this extra work are the contingency funds included within the project budget. CO No. 1 will increase the Net Contract Price by $27,438.00 for a Revised Contract Price of $914,530.00. Please route the attached Change Order to the appropriate individual(s)within the County for review and signature. The equipment made at least 6 passes in a parallel pattern. Subgrade Description: The subgrade was reviewed and consisted of dark brown clayey sand. Elevation: Based on conversations with Carey with WL Bishop the subgrade ranged from approximately 7 to 6 feet below final grade. Summary: Based on our observations,the subgrade soils appeared firm and stable except in six areas where the soils appeared to soft and wet during the application of compactive efforts. Refer to the comments section for further information. Results were reported to Carey at the completion of today's activities. Additional Comments: Six areas showing significant deflection were identified and field marked. It was recommended that the areas be undercut within the field markings to depths determined during excavation activities by a Terracon representative, Measurements were as follows: 1. 21'x 45'x 1.5'for 52.5 cubic yards(excavated today) 2. 40'x 45'x 2'for 113.3 cubic yards(excavated today) 3. 20'x 20'(not yet excavated,area around buried drain line) 4. 20'x 28'x 4' for 83.0 cubic yards(excavated today) 5. 14'x 18'x 6"for 4.7 cubic yards(excavated today) 6. 15'x 25'(not yet excavated,area adjacent to water-filled ditch) Areas undercut today were backfilled with a 2'bridge lift of suitable fill that was cut from the eastern half of the site. The material was tracked in and will compacted and tested at a later date. Areas 3 and 6 will be undercut at a later date. Total volume of soil undercut today was 253.5 cubic yards. Reported To: Carey Additional Comments: On the NW quadrant area there were signs of pumping_beneath the pans while fill was being placed. Contractor undercut 4'of native soil and previously placed fill and backfilled with suitable fill material from on-site. No signs of pumping were visible after the undercut and backfill were performed. The undercut measured 33'x 17'x 4'for 83.1 cubic yards. Contractor is ripping the material but some particles are larger than 4".It was recommended that particles larger than 4"not be placed in the upper 2' of subgrade.The areas of undercut measured 30'x 14'x 2',35'x 22'x 2',60'x 30'x 2'and 35'x 8'x 4'. Soft and wet soil was encountered in this area in a test pit. It was recommended that the material be removed and replaced with suitable fill. The material was removed and a 2'bridge lift placed. Undercut measured 20'x 26'x 6.5'for 125 cubic yards. It was also recommended that on site soils containing large quantities of rock not be used as fill since adequate fines are not present in the material. The contractor stated that he would use on site soils that were less rocky in fill areas. Terracon is providing undercut quantities for information only. We cannot authorize additional cost. The representative also evaluated the soil subgrade at the facility entrance driveway near Walnut Grove Church Road with a probe rod. Two areas of soft and wet material were observed measuring 17'x 3'x 1`and 5'x 1'x 2'for a total of 2 cubic yards. The unsuitable soil was removed and replaced with ABC stone. The topsoil was removed and subgrade material evaluated with a probe rod and observing earthwork equipment traveling across the area. Soft,wet clay was encountered to an average depth of 1.5'. It was recommended to remove the sofVwet clay and replace with suitable fill..
