Dear Chancellor Thorpe,
On behalf of the Orange County Board of Commissioners, I want to express our gratitude for UNC for
allocating 107.6 acres of environmentally sensitive land to be administered and managed by the North
Carolina Botanical Garden as part of the Mason Farm Road Biological Reserve. We understand that this land
is part of the Parker property that was conveyed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by William
and Athena Parker in 1976.
This property is very valuable to our community and it will now be preserved in its undeveloped state
but will still be able to be accessed and enjoyed by the students at UNC as well as interested residents
of/visitors to, Orange County, for generations to come.
The Board of Commissioners recognizes the significance of this allocation of land to the Mason Farm
Reserve and commends UNC for their foresight in this conservation effort and in preserving our environmental
heritage.
Best Regards,
Bernadette Pelissier, Chair
