HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 20060330APPROVED 514!2006 MINUTES ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS MEETING TO DISCUSS SEARCH FIRMS March 30, 2006 5:30 p.m. The Orange County Board of Commissioners met to discuss potential search firms for the Orange County Manager search on Thursday, March 30, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. at the Southern Human Services Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chair Barry Jacobs, Vice-Chair Stephen Halkiotis and Commissioners Valerie P. Foushee, and Alice Gordon COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioners Moses Carey, Jr. COUNTY STAFF PRESENT: Deputy Clerk to the Board David Hunt NOTE: ALL DOCUMENTS REFERRED TO IN THESE MINUTES ARE IN THE PERMANENT AGENDA FILE IN THE CLERK'S OFFICE. The meeting began at 6:00 p.m The Orange County Board of Commissioners met to discuss the County Manager search process and the selection criteria for potential search firms. Each member of the Board had previously submitted aone-page listing of search process components. Each member of the Board had previously received and reviewed the submitted comments from each of their peers. Commissioner Jacobs announced that Anita Badrock with "Smither & Associates, Inc." withdrew from consideration due to time constraints. All Board members agreed their lists of the search process were on comparable paths. The Board discussed key aspects of the remaining two firms, "The Mercer Group, Inc." and "Stavin Management Consultants". A motion was made by Commissioner Halkiotis, seconded by Commissioner Foushee to accept "The Mercer Group, Inc." as the search firm for selecting the County Manager. VOTE: UNANIMOUS The Chair agreed to call both firms after the meeting to inform them of he Board's decision. The Board discussed possible dates to meet with Mercer to define the search process. It was agreed that the meeting would take at least two or three hours. A motion was made by Commissioner Foushee, seconded by Commissioner Halkiotis to add a closed session to this evening's agenda. VOTE: UNANIMOUS A motion was made by Commissioner Halkiotis, seconded by Commissioner Foushee to go into closed session at 6:35 p.m.: "To consider the qualifications, competence, performance, character, fitness, conditions of appointment, or conditions of initial employment of an individual public officer or employee or prospective public officer or employee;" NCGS 143-318.11 {a}(6}. VOTE: UNANIMOUS The Deputy Clerk did not stay for the closed session and the Chair took minutes of the closed session.
