THIS AGREEMENT, entered into this 19th day of July, 2012, by and between Orange County
("County"), by and through the Orange County Arts Commission ("Arts Commission") and The
ArtsCenter("Grant Recipient").
WHEREAS, the Arts Commission is a countywide arts agency that ensures the growth of
local arts experiences by providing funding and support for diverse high quality programs and
proj ects.
WHEREAS, the Arts Commission administers the Spring and Fall Arts Grants Program
to provide economic opportunities to Orange County artists and non-profit organizations
coordinating arts projects benefiting the citizens of Orange County.
WHEREAS, the Spring Arts Grants Program is supported by Arts Commission with
funds from the Grassroots Program of the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency of the
Department of Cultural Resources and the National Endowment for the Arts.
WHEREAS, the Grant Recipient was selected by the Arts Commission to receive the
Spring Arts Grant through the procedures duly adopted by the Arts Commission; and
WHEREAS, both parties wish to promote and maintain the integrity and clarity of the
Grant Recipient's ideas and statements and delineate the Grant Recipient's obligations to the
County;
NOW, THEREFORE, the County and the Grant Recipient, for the consideration and
under the conditions hereinafter set forth, agree as follows:
1. Approved Grant Project. Grant funds are provided under this Agreement for the project
("Project") described in the Grant Recipient's Grant Application, attached hereto and
incorporated herein as Exhibit A.
2. Grant Award. Grant funds in an amount not to exceed one thousand five hundred dollars
($1,500) have been awarded by the Arts Commission to the Grant Recipient for the
approved Project. These funds must be matched at least dollar-for-dollar with cash from
the Grant Recipient's funds not derived from either Orange County appropriations or the
North Carolina Arts Council.
3. Contingency. This grant is contingent on North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots
Program funding to the Arts Commission. Final decisions on Grassroots Program funds
to the North Carolina Arts Council are subject to approval by the North Carolina General
Assembly.
4. Responsibilities of the Grant Recipient

A. Implementation. The Project implementation shall take place between July 1,
2012 and June 30, 2013. The Project shall be implemented in the manner
described in Exhibit A. Time is of the essence in the implementation of the
Proj ect.
B. Modifications to project. Grant Recipient shall present major changes to the
original proposal, including but not limited to changes in design, implementation
schedule and increase in Project budget by more than 10%, in writing to the Arts
Commission for approval. Arts Commission shall approve or disapprove Grant
Recipient's request for modifications within seven (7) days of receipt thereof.
Consent to project modifications shall not be unreasonably withheld. Arts
Commission's decisions shall be in writing. In the event the Arts Commission
fails to approve or disapprove the requested modifications within the time stated
herein, the modifications shall be deemed approved.
C. Non—assignment. The grant cannot be assigned or transferred to a different project
or artist without prior written approval of the Arts Commission.
D. Records. Grant Recipient must maintain records and other evidence pertaining
to costs incurred and revenues acquired during the Project implementation. Grant
Recipient shall maintain financial records pertaining to the Project for three (3)
years from the date of this Agreement, in case of audit.
E. Use of Funds. Grant Recipient shall not use the grant funds to repay outstanding
taxes or other debts of any nature. The grants shall be utilized solely for the
purpose of implementing the Project and Project related expenses.
F. Final Report. Grant Recipient shall submit to the Arts Commission a Final Report
on or before Friday, July 5, 2013 . The Final Report shall be in the format
required by the North Carolina Arts Council. Failure to submit the Final Report
or late submission of the Final Report, for any reason, shall be grounds for denial
and/or cancellation of grant funds for the Project and future grant proposals.
5. Responsibilities of the Arts Commission
A. Payment. The Arts Commission shall release the grant funds in the amount of
$1,500 to the Grant Recipient.
6. Publicity
A. Acknowled eg ment. Credit must be given to the Orange County Arts
Commission using the Arts Commission logo and if State funds are received
to the North Carolina Grassroots Program in brochures, news releases,
programs, and all other printed and online publications. Copies of such printed
materials must accompany the evaluation report. When no printed information is
used, verbal credit shall be given. In addition, all print and promotional material
must include the following credit line (check all that apply):

Orange County Arts Commission with funds from the Grassroots Program of
the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency. "
B. The Grant Recipient must enter all events, exhibits and performances open to the
public and related to this grant award on the ExploreChape1HillARTS.com
website and display ExploreChape1Hi11ARTS.com publicity materials
(postcards, brochures, etc.) prominently and consistently at their venue or
performance space. In addition, the Grant Recipient must add a link to the
ExploreChape1HillARTS.com (ExploreChape1Hi11ARTS.com logo preferred)
to their main webpage. The Grant Recipient shall contact the Orange County Arts
Commission for replacement ExploreChape1HillARTS.com publicity materials.
7. Indemnity. The Grant Recipient agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the County, the
Arts Commission and the North Carolina Arts Council and their officers and employees
from any and all claims or actual injury, damage or loss to a person, or real or personal
property that results from or is in any way connected to the use of the grant funds.
8. Independent Contractor. The Grant Recipient is an independent contractor and not an
employee, agent or other representative of the County and/or the Arts Commission.
Nothing contained in this Agreement shall be construed to create the relationship of
principal and agent, or employer and employee, between Grant Recipient and Arts
Commission or Orange County Government. Grant Recipient understands and agrees
that he/she is not authorized to incur any expenses or any liability whatsoever on behalf
of the County or the Arts Commission and has no authority, expressed or implied, to
obligate or make representations on behalf of the County or the Arts Commission. In
addition, Grant Recipient agrees to maintain his or her own worker's compensation
insurance for himself/herself and his or her employees for the duration of the art work's
installation.
9. Termination
A. In the event of any of the circumstances set forth below (hereinafter referred to as
"default"), the Arts Commission may immediately terminate this Agreement:
(i) Any fraudulent representation in any verification required to obtain
payment under this Agreement or other dishonesty on a material matter
relating to the performance of services under this Agreement.
(ii) Nonperformance, incomplete service or performance, or failure to
satisfactorily perform any part of the Project or to comply with any
provision of this Agreement, as determined by the Arts Commission in its
sole discretion.

(iii) Failure to adhere to the terms of applicable county, state or federal laws,
regulations, or stated public policy.
B. In the event of default by the Grant Recipient, the Arts Commission has the
discretion to elect to terminate this Agreement, in whole or in part and/or require
the Grant Recipient to repay the grant funds within seven (7) from written notice
of default or allow the grant recipient the opportunity to cure the default. This
clause shall not be interpreted to limit the County's or the Arts Commission's
remedies in law or in equity.
10. Miscellaneous.
A. Entire Agreement. This Agreement and the attachments contain the final and
entire understanding of the parties with respect to the subject matter of this
Agreement. All modifications and amendments to this Agreement shall be in
writing. This Agreement shall be binding upon the parties, their heirs, successors
and assigns.
B. Governing Law. This Agreement shall be interpreted in accordance with the laws
of the State of North Carolina and the Orange County.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the Orange County and the Grant Recipient have signed this Grant
Agreement, effective on the last date this Agreement is signed by both parties as indicated by the
dates set forth under signatures below.

Summary Statement for Proposed Uses of Arts Program Grant July 6-22, 2012 is the Eleventh Annual
10 By 10 in the Triangle an international festival of ten ten-minute plays at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro,
NC. 10 By 10 in the Triangle annually brings together local actors, directors, and designers as well as
local regional national and international playwrights in a collaboration that is The ArtsCenter's biggest
theatre event of the year. In 2012 10 By 10 in the Triangle will expand its company to include ten local
directors in addition to the traditional ten local actors. A Triangle tradition, the wide variety of different
plays in one production draws large and diverse audiences. A grant from the Orange County Arts
Commission would help make this festival possible by helping to support the local artists' (specifically
directors')fees.

Application Narrative
Organizational Profile
Over the course of its thirty-eight year history, The ArtsCenter (TAC) has grown from a single
painting class into a vibrant and dynamic multi-purpose, multi-disciplinary, grass roots community
arts center serving more than 60,000 citizens of all ages and walks of life. Constituents come mostly
from Orange County and four surrounding counties in North Carolina, although audience members
travel from throughout North Carolina and even from other states to attend specific music and
theater performances presented during the year in the 355 seat Earl and Rhoda Wynn Theater.
The ArtsCenter is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. It is governed by a thirteen member board
which meets monthly to establish policy, ensure that there are adequate financial resources for the
organization to accomplish its mission, oversee financial expenditures, ensure that earmarked funds
are managed according to the stipulation of funders, manage the organization's assets to protect its
future and ensure that financial controls are in place.
The ArtsCenter is organized into five programmatic departments. These are briefly described
below.
Current Programs and Services
Concerts. TAC presents 60 concerts, representing the spectrum of musical genres by local,
emerging, and nationally touring artists including Folk, Blues, Celtic, Latin, Rock, and Roll, Zydeco,
and Bluegrass.
Theatre. International theatre at its most local, ArtsCenter Stage showcases the work of emerging
and established artists hailing from next door to around the world. Featuring new works and re-
inventions of the classics, improvisation and storytelling, puppetry and musicals, theatre for younger
and older audiences, ArtsCenter Stage is community-oriented theatre with a commitment to
developing new artists and audiences.
ArtSchool. ArtSchool at TAC is Orange County's most comprehensive non-profit resource for
continuing education in the arts on a non-degree, community basis. The ArtSchool now offers
more than 400 classes in all artistic disciplines for all experience levels and ages, awards more than
50 scholarships annually, and offers work-study opportunities.
Youth Programs. TAC has provided artistically excellent, age-appropriate and accessible arts
experiences to Triangle families for over 20 years. Currently, TAC offers the School Show Series,
the SuperFun Series, I<idsCamp,AfterSchool Arts Immersion, and Arts in Education residencies to area
youth and families, reaching approximately 26,000 children in up to six counties. Youth Arts Classes
(YAQ—which includes fine art classes for youth and workshops and camps year round in acting,
musical theatre dance, chorus, stage combat, radio drama, acting for the camera, improvisation and
more. YAC has worked in partnership with PlayMakers Repertory Company and ArtsCenter Stage
on annual productions.
Galleries. The Center Gallery features the work of local and regional artists on a rotating basis.
The Gallery exhibitions highlight the work of more than 100 local and regional artists in 12
exhibitions a year. The East End Gallery provides a second gallery space, offering monthly
exhibitions featuring a mix of local and regional artists.

' The /\rrxCenter 10 By /O /nthe Triangle Z
Proposed Uses Of Grant Funds
2012 marks the eleventh installment of The /\rtsCenter's Annual /O By 10 in the Triangle, an
international festival of ten ten-minute plays. All performances will take place July 6-22, 2012 in the
Earl and Rhoda Wynn Theatre at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro, North Carolina. Community
theatre azits most professional, /O By 10 features local actorn, directmrs, and designers working
alongside local, regional, national, and international playwrights. The /\rtsCenter respectfully asks
the Orange County Arts Commission for a grant of$1,500 to help support the fees for these
homegrown, world-class artists.
From nearly 500 scripts submitted from all over the world, a panel of theatre artists scored plays
through three rounds of reading and selected 20 plays for the semi-final round. Local, Triangle-
based directors for /0 By 10 in the Triangle will select the final ten plays for this production. The ten
plays are new scripts and world premieres by critically acclaimed playwrights as well as up-and-
coming artists. This script selection process extends from January to May and includes several
rounds of reading and scoring. Final selection of plays will take place May 25, 2012.
As the majority of theatre companies are wrapping up their seasons in late spring, The ArtsCenter
is hard-at-work preparing for its biggest theatre event of the year. The 10 By 10 in the Triangle
works with local theatre practitioners during the"off-season" and fills an important niche in cultural
events programming. Bringing the best of the ten-minute-play format to the Triangle since 2002, /0
By 10 is a summer tradition.
The ArtsCenter keeps 10 By 10 ticket prices at a minimum in order to make the production
accessible for members of the Triangle community. For the past ten years, 10 By /0 has served
audiences representative of the diversity of The ArtsCenter's constituency: 2 1%African-American,
8% Asian-American, 10% Latino, 2% Native American, and 59% Caucasian. Patrons to /0 By /0
come from all over the Triangle and Triad areas: Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham, Raleigh, Pittsboro,
Hillsborough, Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, and Greensboro. Patrons traveled from as far away as
Concord, Fayetteville, Grafton, and Lincolnton NC as well as from other far-flung North Carolina
locations. Last year's production also drew patrons from throughout the southeast: Florida,
Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Virginia; and from as far away as California, Delaware, Louisiana,
Maryland, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Texas.
In 2011, 10 By 10 celebrated its I 01h Anniversary with a two-week run of The Best of/0 By /0. This
retrospective re-mounting of some of the best plays from the previous ten years drew over 1630
patrons. This was preceded by a two-week run of the 2011 /0 By 10 in the Triangle with
productions of new plays which drew over 1,575 patrons. The 10 By 10 audiences for these four
weeks totaled over 3,200 patrons. Based on the success of 2011, in 2012, 10 By 10 will expand
from its traditional two-week to a three-week run with additional Thursday night performances
/0 By 10 is a rare opportunity to introduce audiences to the theatre-going experience. As Susan
Broili wrote in The Chapel Hill Herald July 9, 2004: "For many, the festival marked the first time
people had been to the theater judging from the number of hands that went up when [Lynden]
Harris asked audiences if they were there for the first time. People seem more willing to take a
chance when the plays last only ten minutes."

With ten full, albeit short, productions in /O8v /O. the festival exposes audiences toa variety of
theatrical approaches. There are plays that make audiences laugh, that make audiences cry, that
make audiences question; plays with artistic perspectives, political perspectives, socio-economic
perspectives; plays that address age, gender, sexua|izy, ethnicity. family, love; plays with dancing and

plays with singing. Such a diversity of theatrical styles, naturally appeals to diverse audiences.
International theatre at its most local, The ArtsCenter annually sponsors four of the produced
playwrights to come to the Triangle and engage in a cultural exchange that is so vital to our
community. Every year, sold-out audiences interact with these playwrights at the ever-popular
Playwrights Ga|u, atu|kbackwith p|ayvvrighto, actors and directors followed bva Wine & Meet the
Artists Reception at The /\roCenter. (July |4' 2O|Z\' Az this event, audiences learn about the
playwrights' and actors' creative processes, and become a part of that creative process themselves
by suggesting ways that the playwrights can further develop their scripts.
Furthermore, 10 By 10 is a forum for cross-collaborations between area artists. |nZD|2, /08" /0
is expanding to include ten directors as well ay the ten actors traditionally hired. Triangle theatre
companies represented in /08v /Oin the IO| | productions include: P|aymakers Repertory
Company, UNC`s Department ofCommunications Studies, Deep Dish Theatre Connpany, Burning
Coal Theatre Company, Little Green Pig Theatrical Concern, Ghost& Spice Productions, The
Distillery Theatre, Raleigh Ensemble P|uyery, Cary P|aymrm, and Transactors |nmprov. Mainstays of
Triangle theatre will work alongside artists who are either new to the field orto the area; artistic
directors and local college professors collaborate with graduate students and working actors. Such
cross-collaborations are educational and inspiring to participating artists and demonstrate to
audiences that area theatres are united in their mission to contribute tmTriangle culture and �
conmmnunity.
In order to make /0 By 10 in the Triangle possible, The ArtsCenter courteously asks the Orange
County Arts Commission for a grant of $1,500 to help support the artists' fees. Specifically, the
grant would cover the cost of paying the ten directors' stipends. These directors will be rehearsing
in Orange County in four different locations throughout the month of June 2012.
In its eleven years, 10 By 10 in the Triangle has become a tradition that Triangle audiences and
theatre practitioners—and playwrights around the world—look forward to each year. A grant from
the Orange County Arts Commission would be invaluable in maintaining The ArtsCenter as the
largest employer of artists in Orange County, making this year's 10 By 10 in the Triangle a success, as
well as laying the groundwork for continuing this important cultural event in years to come.

Take Noe to the River:
Eurydice Meets Her Fate at The Arts Cer wer

May 14, 2010, Carrboro, NC: The ArtsCenter, although in need of some cash and TLC,
remains a good venue for small-scale plays, such as Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice, playing there
through May 23rd. It is directed by Emily Ranii,who is also artistic director of ArtsCenter
Stage. She is only a few years out of college, but already is developing distinctive work
marked by clean visuals, clever use of limited space, wry wit, and a propensity toward
stylization. She has assembled a talented design team (Cecilia Durbin, moody lighting;
Kelly Farrow, artful costumes;Tori Ralston, puppets)who make more out of the theater's
facilities than seems possible, and a pair of wonderful musicians who perform stage right.
Nathan Logan, the composer, is accompanied by Byron Settle; and their music is an
essential component of the play's success.
Ranii's style is a good fit with Ruhl's(American, b.1974)tart re-working of the myth of
Orpheus and Eurydice,with Eurydice as the central character, who makes her own
decisions and decides her own fate. Ruhl's Eurydice (played here by Jeri Lynn Schulke)
is a word gal; and as much as she loves him, she can't quite carry Orpheus' (Eric
Swenson)tune. The play's exploration of the powers and weaknesses of language, in
opposition to those of music, makes it more than a meditation on love lost to the finality of
death. For this Eurydice, the specificity of words, and their gauzy weave into the tissue of
memory, are worth a very long season in hell. Her journey there is propelled by the loving
memories of her father, a character Ruhl invented. His injection into the myth clarifies the
concern with language—he writes letters; his suit is a patchwork of letters—and
changes the balance between Eurydice and her lover Orpheus. The father, movingly
portrayed by Mark Filiaci, also represents family bonds; but it is the concerns with art and
expression that drive the script.
Eurydice leaves her own wedding for a breath of air, and meets Nasty Interesting
Man/Lord of the Underworld (John Allore). He's had his eye on her; he wants her. She
takes his bait, a letter from her(dead)father, and in reaching for it,falls to her death.The
boatman Charon (who does not appear in the play) must have been a little slack in his
duties as he took her over the\Styx. Not having been fully immersed in the river of
forgetting, she recovers her memory and herself in the flow of her father's words,when
they are reunited in Hades. One of the play's charming aspects is the inclusion of a
chorus of stones—presumably the very stones made to weep by Orpheus' mournful
music.The three comically stylized stones (Jeff Aguiar, Kelly Doyle, and Julie Oliver)
provide a continual patter of explanation, exhortation ("Learn to speak the language of
stones!"), and even encouragement.
Of course, the desperate Orpheus eventually shows up, extracts permission to take
Eurydice back to the upper world, and convinces her to leave. As ever, he loses her again
when he turns to look back at her. Here, however, she has provoked that action, by
calling his name. She chooses to return to Hades, to her father. But her father has thrown
himself into the river, and remembers nothing. She, like Orpheus, has looked back, and
seen only the immutability of death which no language can comprehend, while the
beautiful music plays on.

"Picasso at the Lapin Agile" continues April 1-3 at The ArtsCenter
Starting with its title, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, actor and comedian Steve Martin's frisky
first play relies on namedropping for much of its humor as two real-life 20th century giants
Spanish Cubist painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso(1881-1973) and German-Jewish
theoretical physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955)— have an amusing fictional tete-a-tete on
October 8, 1904 in a seedy Paris bar, where they are miraculously joined by a third 20th
century giant—an instantly recognizable the Visitor from the future—whose influence on
popular music scene since the mid-1950s ranks right up there with Picasso's contributions to
Modern Art and Einstein's discoveries in physics.

Performed in 90 minutes, without intermission, this comedy for mature audiences unfolds like a
series of interlocking "Saturday Night Live" sketches with Picasso (played for ArtsCenter
Stage by Adam Sampieri) and Einstein (portrayed by Lucius Robinson) —two not-so-wild-
and-crazy guys still in their 20s when they meet at the Lapin Agile (Nimble Rabbit)—engaged
in an epic battle of words, with many of their retorts foreshadowing their subsequent
achievements. This verbal volleying about genius and talent and women can be wickedly
funny, but unfortunately a last-minute casting change—with Lucius Robinson switching from
the Visitor to Einstein and veteran Triangle funnyman Jay O'Berski stepping into the Visitor's
role at the 11th hour— has kept the production from gelling, despite the best efforts of an
energetic cast under the guidance of ArtsCenter Stage artistic director Jeri Lynn Schulke.
The good news is, Picasso at the Lapin Agile should improve with each successive
performance.

Last Saturday night, Lucius Robinson was still a little too tentative—obviously not yet
comfortable in the skin of 25-year-old Albert Einstein on the verge of his first scientific
breakthrough—and no match for Adam Sampieri's hotblooded Picasso in his Blue Period,
when his womanizing ways threaten to undermine his artistic ambitions.
Dramatist Steve Martin peoples his inaugural effort at writing a full-length play with some
predictable stereotypes, including Dan Oliver as the Lapin Agile's amiable owner and chief
bartender Freddy; Jenny Wales as Freddy's flirtatious girlfriend Germaine, an artist's model
and infamous femme fatale in real life; and Jon Wilner as Gaston, an aging barfly and one-
time roue whose prostate problems necessitate frequent trips to the restroom.
Actor/director Nick Karner, who exuberantly staged North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theatre's
zesty community-theater production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile in September 2005, is a hoot

as the nerdy but supremely self-confident crackpot American inventor Charles Dabernow
Schmendimen; Jay O'Berski makes his cameo as the Visitor particularly memorable; and Jeff
Aguiar adds some guffaws as the mercenary art dealer Sagot, who's just acquired a Matisse
at a bargain price and hopes that his burgeoning relationship with the up-and-coming painter
Picasso will be similarly profitable.
But it is the wonderfully wacky blond bombshell Sarah Donnell who steals the show with her
outrageous antics as three groupies—the ditty Countess pursuing Einstein; Picasso's latest
conquest Suzanne, who is hoping for a sequel to her whirlwind tryst with the painter; and an
ardent Female Admirer of Schmendimen(!). Donnell's pixilated performance is worth the price
of admission all by itself.

There are about four decent plays in all of 70 by 70 in the Triangle, the 10th
edition of the 10-minute play festival the ArtsCenter in Carrboro has
produced each summer over the last decade.
So why am I really recommending that you catch this production, which
closes this weekend?

Award-winning director and playwright Jon jory has not only championed
the form of the 10-minute play while he was artistic director at Actors
Theatre of Louisville, he established the Heideman Award, the nation's pre-
eminent 10-minute playwriting competition, in 1989, as a part of that
theater's prestigious Humana Festival.
jory has written that 10-minute plays tend to "illuminate moments of
profound change and realization," plumbing the very center of relationships,
issues and characters. Calling them "the haiku of the theatre,"jory has noted
they "can tell a story that 40 minutes or two hours would have ruined, and
we've all gotten stuck with thatguy at a party."
Thus, we would have to recognize Trace Crawford's The Sum of Your
Experience, Tom Swift's The Beginning, Guadalupe Flores' The Coyote
Strategem and .John Paul Middlesworth's Exit Rightas plays that suddenly
immerse us in their characters' worlds, situations and crises. We're then
taken on a journey that feels complete as it follows those characters through
transformative changes.
But why does a .400 average deserve critical accolades? Because another
four scripts in this mix of 10 one-acts fully measure up as superior sketch
comedy—which, come to think of it, isn't the easiest of theatrical goals to
achieve. If Ian Finley's Suspense (which Bare Theatre produced in February of
this year), Justin Warner's Ghost Lite, Tom Deiker's Dating 107 and Eddie
Zipperer's Weight of the World seemed less interested in exploring new
dramatic territory than simply making us laugh, the ongoing vocalized glee
in the near-capacity audience on opening night indicated their triumph at
doing just that.
Indeed, the contribution to the evening's success by this other gang of four
begs the question: Is anyone in the region regularly producing scripted
sketch comedy?judging by the audience's response, there appears to be a
greater appetite for it than a single show per year like 70 by 70 could hope
to satisfy.
Under Sylvia Mallory's direction, actors Chris Chiron and Brook North made
The Sum of Your Experience, a mean-streets shakedown for something
other than a character's money, a taut thrill ride, even if its velocity at points
challenged our ability to understand the dialogue.
The Beginning and The Coyote Strategem made an interesting pair of
theatrical bookends. One concerns the beginning of a relationship, the other
an end. Both depict same-sex couples and benefit from discerning scripting
and direction, and robust acting.
In The Coyote Strategem, director Leslie Cloninger helped actors Kelsey
Didion and Page Purgar define opposing poles—and still find generous,
humane laughter—in their characters' breakup. As directed by Meredith
Sause, J. Alphonse Nicholson and Matt Garner's believable and funny
characters in The Beginning navigated the treacherous currents of their first

after-sex conversation—the one in which they learn, fairly quickly, if they
have (or even want) any future together.
In the loopy comedy Exit Right, Chiron and Didion explore exactly how many
ways two bumbling acolytes can screw up the last words of Garner's
character, their religious leader who is at death's door. Director Caroline
McDaniel's penchant for physical humor, the slow-burn and other comic
techniques nicely fleshes out Middlesworth's rewarding script.
With this strong a crop from one year of this playwriting competition, I'm
particularly interested in seeing ArtsCenter's companion production, The
Best of 70 by 70, presenting its top 10 10-minute plays from the past
decade, when it opens July 22.
