Mission Statement
Our mission is to support, encourage and strengthen the artistic and cultural development of Orange County, NC.
Organization History
Created in1(85 as the official county government agency on the arts by Resolution of the Board of County
Commissioners (BOCC), we serve as a clearinghouse for arts information, facilitate arts program development
and advise the BOCC on the arts. We have served as the Designated County Partner (DCP) - formerly the Local
Distributing Agent (LDA)-in Orange County since 1985. Our on-going arts programs include the following: 2
Grant Cycles (Spring and Fall) annually that fund artists and organizations; participation in annual Emerging
Artists Grants Program through the Durham Arts Council (for 5-county area of Orange, Durham, Chatham,
Person and Granville onunUeo); annual Piedmont Laureate Program (currently for 4-county area ofOrange,
Durham, Wake, and A|omanuecounUeu). Arts Incubation Program; quarterly Artists' Salons featuring free
professional development for artists; monthly e-newsletters and other occasional publications; website providing
arts information, events calendar and a searchable online local arts directory; Annual 4th U.S. Congressional
District High School Art Competition in Orange County (participating with Durham and Wake Counties); Public Art
Located on County-Owned Properties, and Special Arts Projects. We are currently participating in the 2011
Americans for the Arts (AFTA) arts economic impact study entitled Arts & Economic Prosperity IV.

Orange County's Nonprofit Arts and Culture Industry Generates $85.4
Million in Economic Activity and Supports 3,352 Jobs Annually According
to Americans for the Arts.
Arts Industry Returns $8.0 Million in Revenues to Local and State
Coffers.
WASHINGTON, DC - The nonprofit arts and culture industry generates $85.4 million in
annual economic activity In Orange County, NC - supporting 3,352 full -time equivalent jobs
and generating $8.0 million In local and state government revenues, according to the Arts &
Economic Prosperity /V national economic impact study. The most comprehensive economic
impact study of the nonprofit arts and culture industry ever conducted in the United States, Arts &
Economic Prosperity /V was conducted by Americans for the Arts (AFTA), the nation's leading
nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education.
According to the study, nonprofit arts and culture organizations in Orange County, NC spent
$63.9 million during fiscal year 2010. This spending is far - reaching: organizations pay
employees, purchase supplies, contract for services and acquire assets within their community.
Those dollars, in turn, generated $55.6 million in household income for local residents and $5.4
million in local and state government revenues.

state, and national - the arts mean business!" said Martha Shannon, AMERICANS

Nationally, the Arts & Economic Prosperity /V study reveals that the nonprofit arts industry
produced $135.2 billion In economic activity during 2010. This spending - $61.1 billion by

nonprofit arts and culture organizations plus an additional $74.1 billion by their audiences -
supported 4.1 million full -time equivalent jobs and generated $22.3 billion in federal, state
and local tax revenues.
"This study shines a much - needed light on the vital role the arts play in stimulating and sustaining
economic development," says Robert L. Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the Arts.
"Contrary to popular belief, the arts are a bustling industry that supports a plethora of diverse jobs,
generates significant revenues for local businesses and to federal, state and local governments
and provides quality of life that positions communities to compete in our 21 st century creative
economy."
Arts Industry Boon for Local Businesses
In addition to spending by organizations, the nonprofit arts and culture
industry leverages $21.5 million in event - related spending by its
audiences.
As a result of attending a cultural event, attendees often eat dinner in local restaurants, pay for
parking, buy gifts and souvenirs, and pay a babysitter. What's more, attendees from out of town
often stay overnight in a local hotel. In Orange County, NC, these dollars support 643 full -time
equivalent jobs and generate $2.5 million in local and state government revenues.
The Arts & Economic Prosperity W study was conducted by Americans for the Arts and
supported by The Ruth Lilly Fund of Americans for the Arts. Americans for the Arts' local,
regional, and statewide project partners contributed both time and financial support to the study.

We Are the Orange County Arts Commission
The Orange Arts e- newsletter is, an online publication of the Orange County Arts
Commission (OCAC), the official countywide arts agency working to promote the artistic
and cultural development of Orange County.
The Board of County Commissioners appoints the fifteen members of this advisory board. v
The OCAC is physically located at the Chapel Hill /Orange County Visitors Bureau within
the Economic Development Commission. The OCAC sponsors programs to promote the M11-1W.
artistic and cultural growth of Orange County, advises the Board of County Commissioners on matters
involving the arts, and acts as the granting panel for two annual funding programs available to artists
and nonprofit groups sponsoring arts projects in Orange County. Funding comes primarily from Orange
County and the North Carolina Arts Council. � ,9
