Work Experience:
I own a medical research business with approximately 11 employees located at 157 East
Franklin St. Because of this, I walk around downtown Chapel Hill daily and am very
familiar with town issues. As I have relocated employees to this area and. regularly hire
employees, I am also familiar with the attributes of Chapel that make it a desirable place
to live. I also have 4 young children who attend pre-school and elementary school in
Chapel Hill these have taught me about yet another facet of life in Chapel Hill. While I
am in no way beholden to UNC, my wife is an Associate Professor in the Department of
English and Comparative Literature. As a result, I am also familiar with the importance of
maintaining an appropriate balance between the needs of the residents of Chapel Hill.
and the need of the Chapel Hill to facilitate the sensible growth of UNC.
Volunteer Experience:
I have served as a member and later chair of the HDC in Chapel Hill since 2003. This
work volunteer work has been very rewarding. Initially I listened allot. Later, I enjoyed
more actively attempting to protect the historic character of Chapel Hill. In addition, once
I became chair, I enjoyed helping the group to achieve consensus. In general, I am a
pragmatist rather than an idealist. I enjoyed helping to focus the commission on the
relevant topics so that it could make determinations quickly.

Other Comments:
I have, for some time, been working in food and agriculture in various capacities. My
partner, Alison, and I, moved to Chapel Hill in order to raise our first child, whom we are
expecting in December. I would like to work to create sustainable, efficient, effective
systems in Orange County. I believe that my unique background in farming, education,
public speaking, and writing, would lend itself well to the Advisory Boards and
Committees which I have selected preference for. STAFF COMMENTS: Originally
applied for Agricultural Preservation Board, Chapel Hill Planning Board, and Piedmont
Food & Agricultural Processing Center Steering Committee on 08/26/2011, ADDRESS
VERIFICATION: 1515 East Franklin Street, Apt. 27, Chapel Hill is Chapel Hill

Served in the United States Air Force 1981 to 1992 as an Aircraft Pneudraulic Systems
Technician. Honorably discharged in 1992 to begin civilian career. Joined McDonnell
Douglas Aircraft Services from 1993 to 1995 to work as an Aircraft Pneudraulic Systems
Instructor in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Joined Ametek Motors from 1996 to 1997 as
an Electro-Mechanical Technician where I gained experience working in a high speed
manufacturing environment. Here I began to see the trend of U.S. manufacturing moving
to Mexico and overseas. I decided that work in distribution facilities would be where the
new maintenance jobs would be, so I began to assess the requirements for that type of
work. Joined Dana/Spicer Axle from 1997 to 1999 to gain critical experience on high
speed CNC equipment using PLC's (Programmable Logic Controllers). Joined
Integraserv from 1999 to 2000 as a Field Engineer to gain experience working with bar
code scanners and industrial printers which I would need in order to more readily
transition into the field of product distribution. Finally, with a skill cadre suitable for a
position in a major distribution facility I joined lomega Corp from 2000 to 2002 as their
Facilities and Maintenance Manager. I managed 11 employees and all aspects of facility
function including production maintenance. The company invested quite heavily in new
product releases, but were not able to compete against Asia manufacturing and
distribution. The facility was forced to close in 2002. I decided to continue to build on my
distribution experience and joined Worldwide Flight Services in 2002 to work as a Field

Service Technician. There I would learn all aspects of conveyor operation and
maintenance. I also became proficient in the operation and maintenance of passenger
aircraft bridges. I worked their until 2005 when I received a job offer from Bowe Bell
Howell. Began working for Bowe Bell Howell in 2005 as an Mechanical Engineering
Technician II. I was assigned to the product development laboratory where we developed
an industry first mail document inserting system capable of the fastest change-over times
in industry history. I invented a final envelope registration process which eliminated faulty
envelope insertions at high speeds. I worked here until 2008 when a chronic illness
rendered me incapable of performing the physical requirements of the position. The
illness is now managed, but I am unable to do highly physical labor.
Volunteer Experience:
Volunteered to help prepare meals at the local shelter in Burlington, NC. I also did some
work with Habitat For Humanity in 2001.
Education:
I have an Aircraft Technical Training Certification from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University
I have Aircraft Pneudraulic and Electrical Systems Technical Training diploma from the
United States Air Force.
I also possess a Programmable Logic Control
Other Comments:
I would like to give back to the community by offering whatever I am able to provide. I
have lived abroad for 6 1/2 years and have traveled extensively. Since the day I first set
foot in Orange County I knew there was something very special about this diverse
community. I felt as though it was one of North Carolina's best kept secrets. A person
would have to travel far to find another place that equaled the rich cultural diversity found
in our community. I am a better person for having lived here and made friendships with
people I consider to be real treasurers. I would like to do what I can to help preserve the
Orange County's beauty and help her grow. STAFF COMMENTS: Originally applied
