BACKGROUND: The General Statutes require the Board of County Commissioners to receive and take necessary corrective action to the semi - annual jail inspection reports submitted by the North Carolina Department of Human Resources. The statute further states that the governing body shall promptly initiate any action necessary to bring jail facilities into conformity to standards. The report for January 8, 2003 is enclosed for review and indicates Orange County's compliance with standards. The attached letter details the Sheriff's response to the findings of the report. FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with accepting the report. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board of Commissioners receive the report. He noted one item, which needed attention in Section 153A -226, Rule 2900 or 2901 of the inspection that required response. These mattresses have been ordered and will be replaced as soon as possible. Three items in section 3400, Rules 3401 -3426 and 3701 repair of wall in dorm "106" and paint, repair shower and lavatory in dorm 106 and 109. We are in the process of having these repairs in these dorms completed. Our Public Works department has ordered a fast setting concrete to do the repair and also paint. The repairs to the shower and lavatory were completed the same day Mr. Byrd was here. The wall near the dishwasher in the kitchen has been repainted and we are exploring ideas of some kind of wallboard to end the flaking problem. Our Public Works department is in the process of talking with the company who manufactured the dishwasher hood to order a filter for the exhaust.
