BACKGROUND: Dr. Neil Pedersen has served as Superintendent'forche Chapel Hill-Carrboro City~Schools ~CHCCS} for eighteen years. Prior.to that, he served for five years as an Assistant Superintendent. Earlier this school year, Dr. Pedersen announced that he would be concluding his service as Superintendent at the end of the school year. Dr. Pedersen has been a strong advocate for the needs of school students in the Chapel Hill-~Carrbora City Schools district far over 23 years. A proclamation is attached for Board consideration honoring Dr. Pedersen as he concludes service as Superintendent of Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools ~CHCCS} and proclaiming May 1, 2411 as "Neil Pedersen Day" in grange County. FINANCIAL IMPACT. There is no financial impact with consideration of the proclamation RECQMMENDATIQN~S~: The Manager recommends that the Board approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation honoring Dr. Neil Pedersen and proclaiming May 1, 2011 as "Neil Pedersen Day" in Grange County. NEIL PEDERSEN WHEREAS, Dr. Neil Pedersen has served the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools CHCCS} as Superintendent for eighteen years and prior to that as Assistant Superintendent for five years; and WHEREAS, Dr. Neil Pedersen has been a strong advocate for the needs of school students in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district for over 23 years; and WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen's dedication and commitment to CHCCS made him the longest-serving Superintendent in the district's 101-year History and his 18-year tenure makes him the second longest-serving superintendent currently serving in one district in North Carolina; and WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen has not only made an impact on CHCCS, but also on the entire Chapel Hill-Carrboro community and has been an educational leader in the state and nation; and WHEREAS, during Dr. Neil Pedersen's tenure, McDougle Middle School, McDougle Elementary School, East Chapel Hill High School, Scroggs Elementary School, Smith Middle School, Rashkis Elementary School, Carrboro High School, Phoenix Academy and Morris Grove Elementary Schoo! were all constructed; and WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen was named the 201 Superintendent of the Year by the North Carolina Association of School Administrators ~NCASA}, and also that year he was one of four finalists for National Superintendent of the Year in a competition sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators ~AASA}; and WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen's experience and expertise made him a frequent choice far many county and state level leadership positions over the years including Superintendent Advisor to the North Carolina State Board of Education, advisor to the State Board's Committee on Globally Competitive Students, and Co-Chair of the-- Superintendent's -Division of the North Carolina Association of School Administrators, as well as service with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce, .the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation, the orange County Partnership for Young ..Children and Orange County Communities in Schools; and WHEREAS, Dr. Pedersen's continued skills, experience, and dedication to student achievement and commitment to excellence have impacted the lives of former and current students and future residents, and his work is an outstanding example of service that benefits the community v~ell beyond the school district; NGW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim Sunday, May 1, 2411 as NEIL PEDERSEN DAY in Grange County and urge the public to join us in honoring Dr. Neil Pedersen and his many contributions, and to participate in the many activities that are planned for May 1, 2011 in his honor.
