PURPOSE: To consider:
• Purchasing one-hundred mobile radios (mounted in vehicle) and seventy-five portable
radios (hand held) for the Sheriffs Department from Motorola of Schaumberg, Illinois.;
and
• Authorizing staff to execute the necessary paperwork.
BACKGROUND: Orange County as well as rest of the state of North Carolina has begun
utilizing the 800 Mhz VIPER radio system. Currently the Orange County Sheriffs Department is
the only public safety agency in Orange County that is not utilizing the VIPER system.
Providing the Sheriffs Department with this communications equipment will greatly increase
interoperability within the County. Adding the Sheriffs Department to the VIPER system
requires the purchase of one-hundred mobile radios and seventy-five portable radios.
Local governments can cooperatively purchase items through term contracts that are bid
through North Carolina Purchase and Contract. Term contracts such as this contract (725G)
will allow Orange County to take advantage of quantity discounts. Wireless Communications of
Cary, North Carolina is the authorized local sales agent for Motorola and will handle fulfilling this
order. The total cost of the radios will be $473,436.25.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The total amount of this expenditure is $473,436.25. The County will
obtain third party financing for the purchase of the radios.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends the Board:

• Authorize the purchase of one-hundred mobile radios (mounted in vehicle) and seventy-
five portable radios (hand held) at a total cost of $473,436.25 from Motorola of
Schaumberg, Illinois; and
• Authorize staff to execute the necessary paperwork for the purchase of the radios.
