SUBJECT: BOCC Legislative Issues Work Group -Selection of BOCC Members (2)

PURPOSE: The Board will consider selecting two BOCC members to be a part of the
Legislative Issues Work Group (LIWG) for 2011.
BACKGROUND: The North Carolina General Assembly convenes on January 26, 2011. The
legislative bill drafting deadline will likely be around March 7th. The Board will need to decide on
LIWG members so that the group can begin meeting in November/early December. In the past,
meetings in mid/late December and early January have not been workable for the LIWG due to
holiday/vacation conflicts.
The LIWG group consists of two BOCC members, County Manager, County Attorney, Assistant
County Managers and Director of Management Support.
Also, if the Board wants to hold a public hearing on the draft legislative package like in past
years, then staff can plan on scheduling the public hearing at a regular Board meeting on
January 21 or February 2, 2011. The Legislative Breakfast is currently scheduled for Monday,
February 7, 2011.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: NONE
RECOMMENDATION (S): The Manager recommends that the Board select two Board
members to be a part of the Legislative Issues Work Group.
