SUBJECT: A Proclamation to Honor the Community School for People Under Six on its
40th Anniversary

PURPOSE: To adopt a proclamation honoring the Community School for People under Six on
its 40th anniversary.
BACKGROUND: The Community School for People under Six (CSPU6) is a multicultural
community-based program for children and families in the Chapel Hill area. The school was
originally established in 1970 as a parent/staff cooperative. The mission is to provide high
quality early care and education for all children, specifically low and middle income families.
CSPU6 is a private, non-profit 5-star rated center licensed by the State of North Carolina.
CSPU6 provides care and education for children ages 2 months through 5 years without regard
to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, or ancestry. The school promotes cultural, racial,
gender and socioeconomic diversity among families, staff and board directors. At the
Community School, all program activities are designed to build a sense of community and an
appreciation for diversity.
Community School for People under 6 is celebrating its 40th Anniversary on Monday, October
25, 2010 from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Extraordinary Ventures on Elliott Road in Chapel Hill. The
theme for this event is "Honoring Our Past, Embracinq the Present, Envisioning Our Future"
As CSPU6 plans its transition to a new site at 102 Hargraves Street in Carrboro in January
2011, its families, staff and board directors want to extend farewell to the long-time home at 400
Caldwell Extension in Chapel Hill. The school is celebrating and honoring all of the children,
parents and teachers that have come through the doors over the past 40 years.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: NONE
RECOMMENDATION (S): The Manager recommends the Board adopt the proclamation
honoring the Community School for People under Six on its 40th anniversary celebration and
authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation.

HONORING THE COMMUNITY SCHOOL FOR PEOPLE UNDER SIX
ON ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, the Community School for People under Six was originally
established in September 1970 as a parent/staff cooperative; and
WHEREAS, the Community School for People under Six is a non-profit, 5 star
licensed, NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children)
accredited child care center with a multicultural community-based philosophy;
and serves children and families in Chapel Hill and the surrounding area; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the School is to provide high quality early care and
education for all children, specifically low and middle income families; and
WHEREAS, the school promotes cultural, racial, gender and socioeconomic
diversity among families, staff and board directors; and
WHEREAS, these teachers and others who make a difference in the lives of
young children in Orange County deserve thanks and recognition; and
WHEREAS, the Community School for People under Six will be celebrating a
40th anniversary milestone on October 25, 2011;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, the Orange County Board of
Commissioners, do hereby adopt this Proclamation honoring the Community
School for People under Six for its outstanding contribution to the earl childhood

education of so many young people in Orange County over the past 40 years.
