PURPOSE: To consider a proclamation designating November 2010 as "Home Care and
Hospice Month" in Orange County.
BACKGROUND: In-home health, hospice and community based services provide Orange
County residents with access to a wide variety of quality health and social services, including
preventive care, acute care, sustainable long-term care and palliative care. These services
include care provided by home health agencies, licensed home care agencies, .hospice
agencies, adult day care and adult day health care facilities, and home medical equipment
companies. In-home health, hospice and community based services build upon a strong
tradition of care and compassion and strive to keep families intact and responsible while
preserving an individual's independence and dignity in the setting of their choice.
These agencies deserve the public's support and thanks for the services they provide to
individuals, families and the community as a whole.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with the proclamation.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the proclamation
designating November as "Home Care and Hospice Month" in Orange County and authorize the
Chair to sign the proclamation.

Home Care and Hospice Month
November 2010
Whereas, in-home health, hospice and community based services provide for an
individual's health and social needs across the continuum of life -compassionate care which
serves expectant mothers, infants, children, adults, the disabled and elderly, and also provides
love, comfort and support at the end of life; and
Whereas, in-home health, hospice and community based services enable Orange
County residents to access a wide variety of quality health and social services, including
preventive care, acute care, sustainable long-term care and palliative care; and
Whereas, these services include care provided by home health agencies, licensed
home care agencies, hospice agencies, adult day care and adult day health care facilities, and
home medical equipment companies; and
Whereas, in-home health, hospice and community based services build upon a strong
tradition of care and compassion, striving to keep families intact and responsible while
preserving an individual's independence and dignity in the setting of their choice; and
Whereas, Duke HomeCare & Hospice has provided care to the terminally ill patients
and their families for 31 years;
Now, Therefore, we, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners, do hereby
proclaim November 2010 as "HOME CARE AND HOSPICE MONTH' in Orange County,
and urge County residents to celebrate all in-home and community based services.

Duke HomeCare & Hospice Celebrates the National Home Care and
Hospice Month
(Durham)- November is National Home Care and Hospice Month and
home care agencies across the country are reaching out to raise awareness
about home care and hospice.
More than 11 million Americans would rather be treated in the comfort of
their own home when they are sick, than a hospital, nursing home or outside
health care facility. Millions more will be added to our ranks in the near future.
Modern home care has all the bell and whistles of hospital care, with the
exception of surgery. Today, patients can receive everything from chemotherapy
to shampoos. Home care providers work~diligently to keep Americans in their
homes, where they belong. ~'
Founded in 1979, Duke HomeCare & Hospice provides comprehensive
home health, hospice and infusion services to patients and their families in
Alamance, Orange, Chatham, Durham, Person, Granville, Vance, Franklin and
Wake Counties. Their team of professionals and volunteers provides services
ranging from high tech nursing and medical care to basic assistance with the
activities of daily living.
