BACKGROUND: Soroptimist International of Raleigh, NC (SI/Raleigh) is an international service club for business and professional women committed to improving the lives of women and girls locally and globally. Last September, the Triangle J Council of Governments' Board of Delegates agreed to co-host a meeting of members to become aware and better prepared to handle human trafficking in the region. SI/Raleigh is facilitating that session and is coordinating efforts to raise awareness and to foster taking action on human trafficking. Many communities around the world are dealing with the issue of human trafficking. Approaches and tactics to deal with the issue vary in their effectiveness. SI/Raleigh's goal is to address the specific issues and challenges in North Carolina by learning from the experiences in other communities, researching best practices, adapting and implementing them for communities across the region. The Regional Conference "Stop Human Trafficking" will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 starting at 8:30am at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Road, in Raleigh. The desired outcomes of this conference are: • Commitment to lead the region to incorporate policies proven effective in combating human trafficking. • Commitment to incorporate the necessary steps and processes for handling citizen calls regarding human trafficking situations Commitment to establish a timely, seamless referral structure. Soroptimist International of Raleigh, NC commits to facilitate next steps from this conference, such as continued research, arranging informational meetings, and offering administrative support. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None RECOMMENDATION (S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the statement on the impact of human trafficking and information on the September 1, 2010 regional conference on human trafficking.
