Purpose : To designate the week of February 22 - 28, 1998, as Severe Weather
Awazeness Week.
Background: Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. has proclaimed the week of February 22 - 28,
1998, as Severe Weather Awazeness Week. A statewide tornado drill will
be held on February 25, 1998. The drill consists of practice watches and
warnings being issued by the National Weather Service, and broadcast to
the public over radio and television stations. The purpose of the drill is to
heighten citizen awazeness and allow their participation by practicing
movements to safe azeas in their home or office. All county schools
typically exercise their tornado plans during this plan.
Recommendation:
The Manager recommends the Board adopt the proclamation designating
the week of February 22 - 28, 1998, as Severe Weather Awazeness Week,
in Orange County, and encourage citizens to learn more about tornadoes.

A PROCLAMATION
SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK
February 22 - 28,1998.
WHEREAS, Governor James B. Hunt, jr. has proclaimed the week of February 22
through 28,1998, as Severe Weather Awareness Week, and
WHEREAS, Orange County is vulnerable to severe weather, including the
devastation of tornadoes, and
WHEREAS, Tornadoes occur in North Carolina each year, and
WHEREAS, The need for citizens to learn more about tornadoes and
how to protect themselves should be emphasized, NOW
THEREFORE, The Board of County Commissioners hereby designate the
week of February 22 through 28,1998, as Severe Weather
Awazeness Week, and encourage all citizens to learn more about
tornadoes and be awaze of the dangers of severe weather,
especially during the spring season.
Adopted this day of February, 1998.
