BACKGROUND: In celebration of a new millennium, and to increase public awazeness of the lack of affordable housing in Orange County, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County is planning to develop a 4.86 acre tract of land on Rogers Road in central Orange County by January 1, 2000. Specifically, a "community-wide building blitz" is planned in order to construct eleven (11) single family homes for ownership by Orange County families who earn below 50% of the area median income, and, who currently live in substandazd housing. A representative of Habitat for Humanity will be present to provide more details regazding this event. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends adopting a resolution in support of the "Celebrate 2000" Millennium Event to be sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, NC, Inc.. z Resolution Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, NC "Celebrate 2000" Millennium Event WHEREAS, on Apri17, 1998, Habitat for Humanity presented a proposal to the Orange County Board of Commissioners for aoommunity-wide Millennium Celebration focusing on the construction of eleven (11) affordable homes in its Rogers Road Millennium Subdivision; and WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity intends to create eleven (11) homeownership opportunities for low-income households; and WHEREAS, Habitat intends to spearhead a celebration that includes the participation of the broadest possible cross-section of the Orange County community; and WHEREAS, the construction of new or substantially rehabilitated housing units that are affordable to families earning below 60% of the area median income is a stated priority in the 1995-2000 Orange County Consolidated Plan for Housing and Community Development Programs; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Orange County Board of Commissioners that Board endorses Habitat for Humanity's construction of eleven (11) affordable homes through aoommunity-wide Millennium Celebration.
