Proclamation Hillsborough -732-8181 Chapel Hill -968-4501 Durham -688-7331 Mebane -227-2031 PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of April 19 - 25, 1998 as "Orange County Government Week" and endorse the activities planned during the week. BACKGROUND: The National Association of Counties and the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners encourage local governments to celebrate County Government Week in an effort to educate citizens about county government. The attached Calendar of Events (Attachment I) provides an overview of planned activities to be held during this week. These include a variety of educational as well as community outreach activities. Because these activities will provide an increased awareness of government operations, it is recommended that Orange County proclaim the week of April 19 - 25, 1998 as "County Government Week". A proclamation is provided as Attachment II. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the proclamation and endorse the planned activities. 2 ATTACHMENT I ORANGE COUNTY GOVERNMENT WEEK CALENDAR OF EVENTS Apri119 - 25, 1998 April 7, 1998 Commissioners Sign Proclamation for County Government Week Apri121, 1998 Dedication Ceremony & Open House: Southern Human Services Center Apri122, 1998 "Official for a Day" Program All Week Speakers Bureau Offered to Schools TBD WCHL Interviews with Department Heads 3 ATTACHMENT I -.-~ ORANGE COUNTY "OFFICIAL FOR A DAY" Apri122, 1998 AGENDA 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Welcome & Introductions (includes continental breakfast) ^ Government Services Center ^ Department Heads are encouraged to attend 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon Students Mentoring with Department Heads 12:00 noon - 1:15 p.m. Lunch (for Students and Department Heads) ^ Southern Human Services Center 1:15 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. "MOCK" Board of Commissioners Meeting ^ Southern Human Services Center 2:15 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Student Comments /Evaluation ^ Southern Human Services Center 2:30 p.m. Adjourn 4 ATTACHMENT II ORANGE COUNTY GOVERNMENT WEEK April 19 - 25, 1998 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, The North Carolina Association of County Commissioners and the National Association of Counties have urged citizens across the state and the nation to learn more about county government's role in our lives; and WHEREAS, Orange County government has served the citizens of the County since 1752 and places its emphasis on addressing citizens' concerns and needs; and WHEREAS, The elected and appointed officials of Orange County take pride in serving the citizens in the County and ensuring that each citizen knows he or she counts; and WHEREAS, County government provides a wide range of services including public safety, community planning, and human services, which ha~~~~ a direct impact on citizens; and WHEREAS, Citizens may learn about county services and resources through outreach efforts provided by County officials. NOW, THEREFORE, We, the Orange County Board of Commissioners do hereby proclaim the week of April 19 - 25, 1998 as Orange County Government Week, and further encourage all citizens to become familiar with the services provided by Orange County Government.
