Passmore, Director, ext. 2000 Orange County Retired Senior Volunteer Program TELEPHONE NUMBER: Hillsborough - 732-8181 Chapel Hill - 968-2054 Mebane - 227-2031 Durham - 688-7331 PURPOSE: To join Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough in desig- nating May 18, 1998 as RSVP Day in Orange County. A day to honor our senior volunteers for their community service contributions. Last yeaz 633 RSVP volunteers provided 66,558 community service hours to over 100 non- profit agencies throughout Orange County. BACKGROUND: Orange County Commissioners have issued RSVP Day proclamations several yeazs past for additional recognition of the senior volunteers. RSVP, along with you and other special guests, will honor the volunteers on May 18 at the Annual RSVP Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. May be- ing "Older Americans Month" makes it a special time to recognize the senior volunteers. The RSVP also celebrates it's 25th Year Serving Orange County. In addition, we are celebrating along with federal and state governments 1998 as The Year of the Volunteer". RECOMMENDATION(S): Manager recommends that the Commissioners designate May 18 as RSVP Day in Orange County and authorizes the Chair to sign the proclamation. 2 RSVP VOLUNTEER DAY IN ORANGE COUNTY 1998 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Governor James B. Hunt has declared 1998 as the year of the volunteer to connect North Cazolina communities through the spirit and power of the volunteer; and WHEREAS, The Orange County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program celebrates its twenty- fifth yeaz as a leader in helping others through the caring efforts of over 1,800 volunteers who have contributed over a million and a half•hours of their time; and WHEREAS, The Program has currently over 600 volunteers who aze assisting, approximately, 95 Orange County non-profit agencies and who play a vital role in the success of the schools, libraries, senior centers, English As A Second Language and other programs; and WHEREAS, the estimated value of their contribution, calculated at a minimum wage, exceeds six million dollars, saving millions in tax dollazs. NOW, THEREFORE, the Orange County Boazd of Commissioners do hereby proclaim May 18,1998 RSVP VOLUNTEER DAY IN ORANGE COUNTY AND, FURTHER, urge all our citizens to recognize the Program volunteers' contributions to our County and to extend appreciation to those who make this tremendous effort.
