HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 19821011oar ;.~J1~ MlNUres ~~ OCTOBER 11, 1982 The Orange County Board of Commissioners met in special session on Monday, October 11, 1982, at x:30 P.M, in the Agricultural Extension Service's Offices - on Court Street, Hillsborough, North Carolina. Commissioners present: Chairman Richard E. Whitted, and Commissioners Norm Gustaveson, Shirley E. Marshall and Don Willhoit. Commissioners absent: Commissioner Norman Walker. The purpose of the special meeting was to receive reports from the Staff of the Agricultural Extension Division and the Agricultural Extension Advisory Council. Mr. George Corbett, Chair of the Agricultural Advisory Council (hereafter referred to as "Council") welcomed the Commissioners and introduced those members of the Council who were present (Mr. Richard Roberts, Ms. Lynette Jeffries, Dr. Jeffrey Mazza and Ms. Marie Torain, who arrived late). Chairman Whitted introduced those members of the Board of Commissioners who were present and County Staff (County Manager, Ken Thompson, and Clerk to the -.. - j Board, Paulette Pridgen-Pond). Mr. Ebert Pierce, County Extension .Chairman, introduced members of the Staff who would present their reports and those who deserved special recognition (Ms. Scott and Ms. Terrell for their work in the nutrition program with Ms.. Bonnie Davis). AGRICULTURE REPORT: Mr. Dave Warren presented that portion of the Agriculture Report dealing with agronomy and disease control. and his work plan;~to implement those programs. Mr. Ronnie Warren: presented that portion of the Agriculture Report dealing with animal husbandry, forestry and corn and soybean production. 4-H REPORT: Mr. Ervin Taylor presented an overview of 4-H Program aims, while Ms. Mary Fanning focused on special projects of a variety of 4-H Clubs. Ms. Jakie _. I Green reported on one '4-H Club recently formed far those youths who are mentally and/or develo mentally retarded. All .three staff members emphasized the dependence an volunteers and contributions made by volunteers to the 4-H ~~~ 1'.11 ~ program. Three programs were singled out as highly effective: 1) Fun Fair; 2) Career Exploration; and, 3) Expanded Food and Nutrition Program. Following a short break the Board continued to receive reports ..with all - members present as noted at the beginning of these Minutes. HOME ECONOMICS: ~ ~- Ms. Fonrose Gore, gerontology,•skills development and resource management -- specialist, presented a slide show on past programs and planned programs my those areas. Ms. Bonnie Davis, nutritionist, presented her portion of the program and said her efforts were directed towards "enhancing the quality of life in Orange County:" She said urgent, problem areas had been identified. by the Home Economics ~5pecial Committee and-.the•County,.Needs•Assessment Study.. She cited three areas: 1) Food, nutrition, health; 2) Housing/furnishing; and, 3) Human •.. development. P+)s. Davis emphasized inter-agency coordination and cooperation in dissemination of these programs through the detivery systems of the home economics division of Agriculture Extension. ADVISORY COUNCIL REPORT: Messrs. Corbett and Mazza and Ms. Torain presented highlights of a two.day - leadership conference they had attended March 4-5, 1982, in Raleigh. They each emphasized programs which had impressed them most. Mr. Corbett focused on the planning and field trips to laboratories; Dr. Mazza focused on 4-H con- cerns; while Ms. Torain.detailed tours, panels and planning for the $0's. Commissioner Wil1hoit, during. the quesi;ion and. answer session, asked Ms. Davis about agency coordination and possible duplication of target populations. Ms. Davis said they taught nutrition to the seniors at the Centers for.J000A; they aided the Health department in working with young mothers in nutrition and • the same for the Department of Social Services. Sre added that both Departments made referrals to her and Ms. Gore; they are able to provide programs that other agencys cannot.
