PURPOSE: To discuss issues of concern to the Chapel Hill - Carrboro Board of Education.
BACKGROUND:
a) Significant Elements of 2000 -2010 CIP
The Manager's Recommended CIP for 2000 -2010, including school project allocations
proposed by the two school boards, was presented to the Board of Commissioners at their
March 23 work session. The BOCC will conduct a more in -depth review of the recommended
CIP at a budget work session on March 29. This March 27 meeting will provide an opportunity
for CHCCS to highlight the major elements of their proposed CIP, including their projected need
for a new elementary school by 2003 -2004 which is unfunded in their CIP.
b) Acquisition of New School Sites
Last fall, the Chapel Hill - Carrboro Board of Education appointed a Long Range Facilities Master
Planning Committee to plan for major future needs, especially new schools. That committee
has written to the Superintendent with a recommendation that CHCCS consider purchasing
several new school sites. This meeting will provide CHCCS the opportunity to review potential
school sites with the Board of Commissioners.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact tied directly to the discussion at this
meeting. However, decisions that may be made by one or more of the elected boards at
subsequent meetings are likely to have significant implications for future capital and operating
budgets.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the boards discuss the issues noted
and provide direction to staff, as appropriate.
