BACKGROUND: The Clerk's office has received a recommendation from the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau for Anthony Carey. Mr. Carey is the General Manager for the Siena Hotel and resides in Alamance County. If appointed he will be serving his first full term ending 12/31/2012. Below is excerpt from Volunteer Resolution. 5. No resident of Orange County shall serve in more than two appointed positions of Orange County Government unless exempted by the nature of the position he or she may hold in governmental service. This policy shall not apply to individuals who serve on boards or commissions because of their official position. /t also does not app/y to volunteers serving because of a requirement that a particular type of professional individual be represented if recruitment efforts have failed to locate other qualified persons. This policy shall not apply to citizen service on one short-term task force (making a total of three appointments) if the duration of service is less than one year. A "Task Force" is defined as a group with a specific charge and a short duration for its work. This policy shall not apply to any Orange County Commissioner who serves on any board as an appointee or a liaison to a board because he/she is a County Commissioner. This seat has sat open for several months and I'd like to take the opportunity to nominate Anthony Carey, a longtime Orange County hotelier, for this seat. As general manager of the Siena Hotel, Anthony has seasoned knowledge of the local hospitality industry; include occupancy, rate and revenue trends. Additionally he leads one of the top restaurants in our county, Il Palio. Anthony's role in the community has involved more than twenty years with local lodging associations; board membership with the Chapel Hill/Carrboro Chamber of Commerce and work with northern Orange County soccer facilities. He continues to give us his time and resources to benefit Orange County. Anthony resides in Alamance County and we need to be clear to the BOCC that there is no general manager or leader in the local hospitality industry who resides in Orange County and wants to serve on this board. I hope, like Jim Parker, they will allow his work contributions to serve as a statement about his dedication and contributions to the county in which he works and spends a large part of his time.
