SUBJECT: Triangle Transit Presentation on Plans for Expansion of Bus and Rail Services

PURPOSE: To receive a presentation from Triangle Transit staff regarding the latest
available information on Orange County plans for expansion of bus and rail services in
the region.
BACKGROUND: The Regional 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan includes the
Regional Transit Vision Plan recommended by the Special Transit Advisory Committee
that was appointed by both the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Capital Area
Metropolitan Planning Organizations. The Federal Highway Administration approved
both metropolitan transportation plans for air quality conformity on June 15, 2009.
The Regional Transit Vision Plan proposes:
• Light rail transit stretching from North Raleigh to Cary, Research Triangle Park,
Durham and Chapel Hill;
• Major expansion of local bus service in Raleigh, Cary, Durham, and Chapel Hill and
along Triangle Transit routes; and
Increased express bus service from outlying areas into center cities.
Triangle Transit will present an update on the latest news on enabling legislation at the
General Assembly for local options for transit, the best estimates of available funds in
up-to-date financial plans, and the services that can be funded by those financial plans.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no direct financial impact associated with this item.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Interim Manager recommends the Board receive the
Triangle Transit presentation.
