PROCLAMATION
OLDER AMERICANS MONTH -MAY 2009
WHEREAS, according to the latest population figures, there are more than
18,000 persons over 60 years of age in Orange County in 2009; and
WHEREAS, the over 60 age group is the fastest growing population sector in
Orange County and is projected to grow to over 28,000 older adults by 2020 and
double to over 36,000 older adults in 2030; and
WHEREAS, the increasing number of aging boomers reaching traditional
retirement age highlights the need for increased support of older adults; and
WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of Orange County and all public and private
entities to work collaboratively to address older adults' unique health and long-
term care challenges; and
WHEREAS, older adults are valuable members of our society who enhance our
communities and personal lives; and
WHEREAS, Orange County is proud of the older adults who live here and
wishes to show appreciation for what they contribute to their County, State and
Nation; and
WHEREAS, the theme for Older Americans Month is "Living Today for a Better
Tomorrow";
NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, join
the Governor of North Carolina and the President of the United States in
proclaiming May 2009 as OLDER AMERICANS MONTH and further encourage
all residents to join us in honoring our older Americans.
