PROCLAMATION
CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY
IN ORANGE COUNTY
WHEREAS, strong mental health is essential to the success of a child; and
ti
WHEREAS, according to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, at least
one in five children and adolescents have a mental health disorder with one in 10, or about 6
million people, suffering from a serious emotional disturbance; and
WHEREAS, mental health disorders can have negative impacts on behavior, school
performance and concentration; and
WHEREAS, untreated mental health disorders can lead to alcohol and drug abuse, violence,
and life threatening behaviors; and
WHEREAS, an awareness of mental health services extended through Orange County schools
can lead to diagnoses and treatments of mental health disorders; and
WHEREAS, opportunities exist as parents, teachers, guidance counselors, neighbors, friends,
and other concerned adults to reach out to the youth of Orange County in need and help supply
education, information, and mental health resources; and
WHEREAS, Orange County government has been engaged and proactive through the Orange-
Person-Chatham Area Authority in supporting a network of providers responding to youth in
need;
NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim May
7, 2009 as CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY in Orange County and
commend it to County residents.
