PURPOSE: To update the Board on the status of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council
BACKGROUND: In response to the Juvenile Justice Reform Bill, it has become necessary for the
current Youth Services Advisory Commission (YSAC) to prepare for transition to the newly
established Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. Duties and responsibilities of the council will be
similar to, in some ways, and exceed in others, that of the YSAC. Such duties and responsibilities
include:
• assessing the needs of juveniles in the community;
• evaluating current services and programs to juveniles;
• increasing public awareness;
• developing strategies for intervention;
• administering funds for treatment services to juveniles and families; and
• planning for permanent funding of delinquency prevention services.
With a few exceptions, membership of the Council (as designated in Senate Bill 1260) is similar to
that of the Criminal Justice Partnership Program (CJPP) Advisory Board. At their December
meeting, the YSAC agreed to pursue collaborative efforts with the local CJPP board. The Orange -
Chatham CJPP Advisory Board is scheduled to meet Wednesday, January 20, 1999 and will discuss
coordination of these responsibilities.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the report as
information.
