Background: At the December 1, 1998 Board of Commissioners meeting, the Board approved the creation of the new Environment and Resource Conservation Department (ERCD). It began operation on January 4, 1999. As part of the proposal to create the new department, two new positions were planned: an administrative assistant and a natural resource conservation manager. This abstract addresses the Administrative Assistant position. Staff will return in February with the proposal to establish the natural resource conservation manager position. The Administrative Assistant will provide administrative and clerical support to the new ERCD department. In addition, the Administrative Assistant will provide administrative support to five advisory boards (Commission for the Environment, Historic Preservation Commission, Shaping Orange County's Future Task Force, Water Resources 2 Committee and Master Recreation and Parks Work Group, which includes preparing minutes for three of the five boards. As provided in the new department report, funding for the new Administrative Assistant will come from the Board of Commissioners' contingency fund and estimated costs (including salary and benefits) are $12,000 for fiscal year 1998-99 (assuming the position is filled in March) and $36,000 for fiscal year 1999-00.
