Background: The Orange County Arts Commission awards up to $1000.00 in matching funds to artists and arts organizations for arts projects and events taking place in Orange County between January and June 30, 1999. These grants are used to support programs in the visual, performing, and literary arts. Funded projects include theater performances, art exhibits, writers' conferences, children's arts and crafts, programs for seniors, and outdoor concerts, each to benefit Orange County citizens. Orange County Arts Commission Grants, which are county funded and limited to $1,000 or less, differ from the "Grassroots Grants," to be awarded at this meeting as well, in that Orange County acts as a Designated County Partner with the State to provide funds for Grassroots Grants. The Orange County Arts Commission, as an approved Designated County Partner (DCP), sub grants Grassroots Grants to local arts organizations from funding provided by the North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program. Funds are distributed for arts programming that reflects the racial and cultural diversity of the county. Each organization receiving a Grassroots Grant matches the grant amount with local dollars in order to receive an award. Recommendation: The Manager recommends that the Board of County Commissioners acknowledge the local recipients of the awards during the January 19, 1999 meeting with the presentation of checks by the Board Chair, Alice Gordon. 4 Orange County Arts Commission Page 2 Grants 1998-99 APPLICANT ORGANIZATION 1 AL Stanback Drama Club PROJECT The Grease Adventure ~~ 500 2 Jelly Educational Theater Wheelchair Dancer 1000 3 Friends of the Carrboro Library Library Arts Program 1000 4 Carr Court Family Resource Ctr Quilting Circle 800 5 Susan Simone Fotos Del Pueblo 1000 6 ECHHS PTSA Cult Enrich High School Artist Residencies 1000 7 The ArtsCenter 1st Annual NC Rhythm Tap Festival 1000 8 The ArtsCenter Theater Design Workshop 750 9 ArtsCenter Family Programs Spring 1998 School Show Series 1000 10 McDougle Elementary PTACE African-American Heritage Arts Series 1000 11 The Triangle Chamber Music Society 9th Annual CH Chamber Music Competition 500 12 The Durham Symphony Annual Hillsborough Family Pops Concert 1000 13 Hillsborough Elementary PTA CA Chinese Festival/Artist-in-Residence 561 14 Efland Cheeks Elementary CA Performers in Northern Orange 700 15 Chapel Hill High School Band Purchase of Bach Stradivarius 36 Trombone 500 16 ~ Hillsborough Arts Council Parlor Performances 1000 17 Choreo Collective Art Accessibility/Artistic Development 520 18 NC Writers' Network 1999 Spring Gala 700 ' i ~A{~` a Y.~t ~. s 1 1 »~+" nf" Cl; ,3.f. • '4y^L "~'Jk ~. .~:'kl,R. , '1, ....~1' ~e 1!8/99 Orange County Arts Commission 1998-99 Grassroots Grants ORGANIZATION 1 Botanical Garden Foundation 2 Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission 3 Community Youth Theatre 4 Hillsborough Arts Council 5 NC Writers' Network 6 Occaneechi Band of the Saponi 7 Orange County Cultural Arts Group 8 PTSA Cultural Enrichment Committee 9 The ArtsCenter - NC Youth Tap 10 The ArtsCenter -The ACT 11 The ArtsCenter-Family Programs 12 Women's Voices PROJECT Sculptural Art Exhibitition Purchase of display case for 3-D items Summer drama program Partial funding of outdoor jazz concert Subscriptions to literary publications American Indian Cultural Festival Community based cultural arts festival "Tarheel Talent for Our Schools" Commission new dance for company Produce 3 plays involving OC area staff Costs for KidsCabaret Women's community Chorus Page 3 AINABQ 1000 1500 1000 1000 300 1750 1500 5200 1000 1000 3000 850 3 s 1998-99 Grassroots Grants Recipients In Order of Acceptance The Orange County Arts Commission, as an approved Designated County Partner (DCP), sub grants Grassroots Grants to local .arts organizations from funding provided by the North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program.
