Fikes Information Sheet TELEPHONE NUMBERS: - -eat. 2490 Timeline Hillsborough 732-8181 Chapel Hill 968-4501 Durham 688-7331 Mebane 227-2031 PURPOSE: To adopt a resolution in support of County elected officials and staff volunteering to help construct a home during the "Celebration 2000" Millennium Event sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, NC, Inc.. BACKGROUND: In celebration of a new millennium, and to increase public awazeness of the lack of affordable housing in Orange County, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County is planning to develop a 4.86 acre tract of land on Rogers Road in central Orange County by January 1, 2000. Specifically, a "community-wide building blitz" is planned in order to construct eleven (11) single family homes for ownership by Orange County families who eazn below 50% of the azea median income, and, who currently live in substandazd housing. On April 7, 1998, the BOCC adopted a resolution of support for this event. At this time, Habitat is asking that local government elected officials and employees partner with a local, professional organization to sponsor a home in the Rogers Road neighborhood. Specifically, while the local organization is able to raise most of the funds required for the home, volunteers will be needed to perform actual construction duties. Thus, Habitat is asking that Orange County, Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough elected officials and employees volunteer to help construct a home in this neighborhood. A representative of Habitat for Humanity will be present to provide more details regarding this proposal. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends adopting a resolution in support of County elected officials and staff volunteering to help construct a home during the "Celebration 2000" Millennium Event sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, NC, Inc.. 2 Resolution Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, NC "Celebrate 2000" Millennium Event WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, Inc. proposes acommunity-wide Millennium Celebration focusing on the construction of eleven (11) affordable homes in its Rogers Road Millennium Subdivision; and WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity intends to create eleven (11) homeownership opportunities for low-income households; and WHEREAS, Habitat intends to spearhead a celebration that includes the participation of the broadest possible cross-section of the Orange County community; and WHEREAS, the construction of new or substantially rehabilitated housing units that are affordable to families earning below 60% of the area median income is a stated priority in the 1995-2000 Orange County Consolidated Plan for Housing and Community Development Programs; and WHEREAS, on April 7, 1998, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners endorsed Habitat for Humanity's construction of eleven (11) affordable homes through acommunity-wide Millennium Celebration; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Orange County Board of Commissioners that Board pledges the volunteer support of County elected officials and county employees with the construction of one (1) affordable home during the community-wide Millennium Celebration. This initiative will provide a stimulus for community involvement to create affordable housing; educate and increase awareness about poverty hous- ing and its causes; offer "a hand-up" to eleven working Orange County Advisory Board families; and bring all members of Orange County together to build com- • munity and new relationships for the future.
