The Orange County Board of Education listed a new middle school as an item for
discussion. As you are aware, we are not including a new middle school in our
CIP. However, we are in the process of building an elementary school and a
high school. All the indicators are pointing to rapid growth in the northern part of
the county. The two schools coming on line over the next three years will allow
us some room for growth, but currently our two middle schools, one at capacity
and the other over capacity, will not be affected by the new schools constructed
in our system.
I have included the latest student membership figures for our system. The
capacities for all our schools are listed as well. We will also share with you how
deceiving capacity numbers are today based on situations in our schools that
take up additional space for very few students and required programs.

We have received information recently from the County Office and the Town Board that projects
somewhere between 1500 -2000 new homes in northern Orange County over the next several years. Using
the .33 formula for student projections, we could receive between 495 -660 students. Using .66 (a more
realistic figure), the number of students could range from 990 -1320.
