Purpose: To proclaim the month of April as "Public Health Month" and endorse activities
planned during the month.
Background: The Governor has proclaimed April as Public Health Month in North Carolina.
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services encourages local counties to plan activities
to educate the community about public health. The Calendar of Events provides a list of some
of the planned activities in Orange County. Health education, screening, outreach, and public
awareness events aze scheduled.
Financial Impact: None
Recommendation: The manager recommends that the Board adopt the proclamation and
endorse the planned activities.

PUBLIC HEALTH MONTH PROCLAMATION
APRIL 1999
WHEREAS, Governor Hunt has proclaimed April as Public Health Month in North
Carolina; and
WHEREAS, Promoting the health and well-being of all residents of Orange County is
paramount; and
WHEREAS, Controlling and eliminating communicable diseases is necessary to ensure
that our communities are healthy places in which to live; and
WHEREAS, Protecting residents by safeguarding water and food supplies and
monitoring waste discharge systems is critical for environmental and personal health; and
WHEREAS, Encouraging healthy lifestyle behaviors assures optimal quality of life and
improved health status; and
WHEREAS, Ensuring the optimal growth and development for all Orange County
children is vital for the future of our communities; and
WHEREAS, Public Health contributes to the prosperity of Orange County residents by
promoting health, preventing disease, and protecting the environment, every day, every
where, and for everybody regardless of religious, ethnic or socioeconomic background;
THEREFORE, We hereby proclaim April, 1999 as PUBLIC HEALTH MONTH in
Orange County.
