RE: RECOMMENDED APPOINTEE TO THE COMMISSION FOR WOMEN
The Orange County Commission for Women (CFW) held a meeting on Thursday, May
14, 2009, and one of the actions taken by the CFW was to make recommendations for
appointment to the CFW. Thus, the CFW requested that application of the following resident be
submitted to the Board of County Commissioners for their consideration: Kathryn Shectman.
The Commission for Women is committed to increasing the diversity of Commission
members and committed to preserving a geographical balance of representation whenever
possible. In addition, all of the applicants have voiced an active interest in advocating for
women, improving the quality of life for women in Orange County and a willingness and ability
to attend the Commission's meetings and participate in its projects.
Please let me know if additional information is required or if clarification is needed in
regards to any information contained in this memo. Your assistance with this matter is

UNC-CH in the Department of Pharmacology as a Research Analyst for 7 years.
Volunteer .Experience:
Right now, I am a member of the Carrboro Elementary PTA (grounds committee). I am
also the Vice President of our Homeowners Association as well as Secretary of the
Kehillah Preschool Board. Previously,~l volunteered at the Durham Literacy Council
teaching adults to read at TROSA. I also volunteered at the NC Museum of Life Sciences
for 2 years.

I have a BS in Biology from Drake University.
Other Comments:
As one who uses the services of the Carrboro Parks and Rec on a regular basis, I think I
may be a beneficial member of this board. I think that the Parks and Rec has a great
selection of programs/activities offered to young children and retirees as well as all ages
in between. I try to stay in tune with the issues that arise in association with the Parks
and Rec of Carrboro. The commission for Women is a wonderful resource that can have
an impact on so many different people in Orange County. As an advocate for womens
rights, as well as an advocate for education on womens issues, I feel I would be a
