PURPOSE: To approve a mural design by Michael Brown for the Bentley building, an Orange
County building in Chapel Hill that houses the Visitors Bureau and other departments.
BACKGROUND: On September 24, 2008 the Chapel Hill /Orange County Visitors Bureau
Board of Directors approved the allocation of $100,000 from fund balance of which $20,000
would be used to re- design the back parking lot and breezeway entrance of the Visitors Center.
Over time this has become the front entrance for the building. On November 18, 2008 the
Board of County Commissioners approved the budget amendment.
The look of this County building is proposed to change by adding a public mural to it. The mural
design is floral, will make the building easily identifiable, and will be in keeping with the County's
commitment to public art. The building mural will also serve as a practical way of directing the
public to the Visitors Center. The Visitors Bureau will also work with local publications to
promote the Visitors Center location as the "flower mural building ".
Muralist Michael Brown will be retained following approval from the Chapel Hill Planning
Department to begin the work.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The cost of mural will be $6,500 paid out of the Visitors Bureau budget
and encumbered out of the FY2008 -2009 budget as originally allocated.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends the Board approve the proposed Visitors
Bureau /Bentley building mural and the $6,500 in funds be encumbered out of FY 2008 -2009
budget as originally allocated.
